And so it begins! The first SMOG training of the year was a success with the team knuckling down in windy Manchester to make a strong start to the season.
Faces both old and new benefitted from a throwing session with Tom Bennett where we learnt gems such as “if you just throw it 5 metres further, you’ll score a point” and that half of a quarter is actually an eighth. Where would we be without him? We also started work on offensive and defensive tactics as well as our mental toughness and working hard for each other.
Saturday night saw us heading out to dinner and bowling where, much to everyone’s disappointment, Fraser McDonald secured a victory on the final bowl, despite having only one working foot. Probably for the best as who knows what he would’ve broken if he’d lost.
If this weekend was anything to go by, we’ve got one hell of a season ahead!
For a “young, up-and-coming” team, most of us are getting pretty old and nothing makes you feel older than writing a post about your teammates playing uni nationals (although let’s face it, a lot of them are on their 23rd degree).
It was a mixed bag weekend for SMOG with reps on a number of teams. The girls smashed it with Geegee and the Birmingham women taking 6th at Div 1 and Sarah Ladd and Durham smashing their seed to come 3rd at Div 2.
Meanwhile, the boys were bringing the drama. Sam and Sheffield won their bracket after a pre-quarter loss to come 9th, with Bangor only one spot behind them in 10th with only 5 men including Dom.
Durham men would prefer we didn’t discuss their 13th place finish. With 4 WUCC players on a uni indoor team, hopes were high but after beating DK in the first game (their main aim) they stopped playing as their work was done. To top it off, in a spectacularly on-brand move, Fraser Macdonald wasn’t sure he’d hurt himself at this tournament so kicked a door and broke his foot, just to make sure.
The annual SMOG trials commenced in Newcastle last weekend, trialists battled through the brisk Northern weather for the hope of grabbing one of the 40 roster spots that were available. On Saturday players endurance and fortitude was put to the test with multiple 7’s games against assorted teams, everyone battled tooth and nail at every given opportunity and really impressed the coaches. The Sunday brought around a fitness combine, trialists were tested in 3 categories: broad jump, 40 yard dash and serpentines, after this followed some defensive drills and then straight back into games with everything left to play for.
The inaugural SMOG hat went down this August, with Stand Out Riot as the headline act at the Saturday night USA themed party followed by hours and hours of TOP quality karaoke. Photos from the game play are finally here!
