SMOG's first ethnic minority captaincy team, the Welsh and Northern Irish combo are a force to be reckoned with.
Emily McCabe, raised in sun drenched Belfast, has played internationally with Ireland Juniors in 2013, Ireland Mixed U23 and Ireland Women in 2015 and was selected for Ireland Mixed last year (Northern Irish players enjoy dual IRE/ GB eligibility). She was joint captain of giant-killing Euros-qualifying SMOG 2, calling the strats for the D line. She's a tenacious handler, who knows when to use her throws to make the disc do the work and when to use her speed to move the disc down the pitch. She works full time as an audiologist.
Tom 'Yellow' Lees, hailing from the North Wales metropolis of Wrexham, has been playing for SMOG since 2018, being enticed with a five figure transfer deal from Mighty Hucks. The potent leftie can usually be found anchoring SMOG 1's O line, using his arsenal of intricate breaks and powerful hucks to turnover in new and inventive ways. He is a European bronze medallist with GB Mixed Beach and bronze medallist with GB guts (that's a flying disc game, not a fat joke). He works in logistics for an online distribution company.
But what's on the cards for 2021 from this dynamic duo?
Yellow: 'I was selected for SMOG in the year that we went to Worlds and was blown away by the drive and comradery of the team. SMOG taught me a lot about what it takes to be successful as a club. I would like to pass on what I’ve learnt and try to instill the same energy that helped us achieve so much.'
Em: 'I have adored playing for SMOG since 2018 but I struggled to find my place in the team within my first year. I really found my footing when asked to captain SMOG 2. We went from a group of people who were disappointed not to be chosen for SMOG 1, to an absolute powerhouse making history as the first second team at Euros. One of my personal goals for this team is to nourish our love for the sport and for each other. Team cohesion is so important, and alongside concise tactics and an ambition to go far, we have the capacity to do amazing things.'
Ultimately, we want to create an atmosphere of high athleticism and competition, but also a place where we can appreciate each other's strengths and encourage fellow players to come forward with ideas.
SMOG's first black and first female president coolly swans into the room, newly braided hair swinging gently. She's a business development manager for a national charity. She brings practical knowhow and careful attention to detail to all of her work.
"I thought when I signed up, I'd get to at least play a bit, but so far it's just turned out to be bloody AGMs. Did you realise I've organised more AGMs than we've attended tournaments? I don't think I can take another discussion about recruitment strategy without slapping someone."
A previous SMOG captain, Lucy is back on the committee as kit secretary. As a full time doctor, she's very busy and didn't find time to talk to SMOGUE. Therefore, we're going to imagine what she said:
"Tom did a great job on the kit designing last year so I'm mainly here for the inevitable fight to get people to pay for their kit.
There's nothing better than getting home from a stressful 12 hour night shift and just decompressing by sending reminder emails to people who get picked for the squad but didn't fill in the order form on time, mainly because they were too busy playing League of Legends or online shopping. I know that they will fob me off with an 'Oh sorry, I've been really busy and I missed this email', but that's all part of the chase for me. We both know that email means 'I'm a compulsive procrastinator, brought on by a netflix and social media addiction'.
Honestly, I can't wait."
Erika Neave and Natasha Lim
Natasha first played for SMOG in 2019, following a successful transfer from haggis-quaffing outfit Black Eagles. She's been out for a season with a serious knee injury, but fans of crisp handler movement and excellent decision making will be pleased to hear that Callum Spiers will also be back this season. Tush has nobly volunteered to be our North East COVID officer.
Erika is yet to play a tournament with SMOG, being selected for the 2020 season. She was previously a dynamic cutter for Toro, a US mixed team based out of Durham, North Carolina. When googling alternative teams to play for in Durham, she came across SMOG and immediately signed a four year contract.
She was surprised to discover she would be moving to the UK, but decided to make the most of it, studying a masters in Liverpool and volunteering to be our North West COVID officer.
Callum Spiers
After seeing off a stiff electoral challenge from 'RON', Callum is back on the SMOG committee as social media rep. His motto is 'bite off more than you can chew and then chew it', and funnily enough his dietary advice is doing the complete opposite of that.
Hollie Cardwell
SMOG's secretary is returning for a second term. She has an excellent working relationship, dare I say 'bestfriendship', with president Tiff, and is looking forward to working hard for the glory of SMOG.
'Ever since I got cursed by that old gypsy woman, I've found that I enjoy the boring things in life. I love eating plain bread and plain rice. I always ask for a big mac without ketchup, but this one time they left the ketchup on, so I had to wash it off in the ladies' toilets.*
I just can't wait to get cracking on all the admin. I've scheduled when I'm going to schedule our committee meetings and I've been practicing my tone of voice for talking on the phone to venues, so that they know I'm desperate to book the pitch, but desperate in a good way.'
